What is Counselling?

Counselling assists those who are going through specific situations or difficulties in their lives. Counselling may involve one-on-one therapy or couples therapy.

A defining characteristic of counselling is its focus on present-day struggles. Counselling does not bring up childhood issues or events in the past that cannot be changed. Therefore, counselling usually does not last longer than six months.

Counselling may focus on many issues such as Life transitions, Relationship difficulties, Loss of a loved one, Poor self-image, Suffering from physical or mental illness, Loneliness, Stress, Addictions and Parenting struggles

Since counselling involves present-day issues, it is more action-oriented than psychotherapy. A counsellor will often assign behavioural modifications to improve the patient’s struggle.

Generally speaking, people seek out counselling to feel supported in a certain area of life or at least obtain a non-judgemental opinion of it. People may also seek out counselling to get objective feedback on the areas in life where they can improve.

What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy treats chronic mental or emotional struggles caused by a past trauma or event. These traumas, often occurring in childhood, can hold deep repercussions for how people relate to themselves and others in present-day life. A psychotherapist helps a patient identify these events and discusses them at length with the patient. These compassionate discussions can help the patient reframe the trauma, thereby helping them function better in everyday life.

Traumatic events taking place in childhood or early adulthood may include Divorce, Family abuse or dysfunction, Accidents, Bullying, Loss of a loved one and Substance abuse.

Psychotherapy typically involves one-on-one therapy. Moreover, since people undergoing psychotherapy treatment tend to suffer in more areas of their lives, psychotherapy usually lasts longer than counselling. It’s normal for psychotherapy to take months or even years until patients experience significant improvement in coping with their trauma.
